  • Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery - By far one of my favorite stories about an orphan girl that gets adopted by a brother and sister living together. Great book to read and also an excellent movie to watch. This will have you crying and laughing all throughout. A great movie for the whole family to watch (boys too!).
  • The Baby BeeBee Bird by Diane Redfield Massie - What happens when a new little creature is brought into the zoo, nothing...until nighttime. After dark all you hear is beebeebobbibobbi ALL NIGHT LONG!!!! Crazy nighttime antics at the zoo and the animals' humorous solution.
  • Do Try To speak As We Do: The Diary of an American Au Pair by Marjorie Leet Ford - As an au pair, Melissa finds herself in an odd place in her Scottish family - something more than a servant, something less than a guest. As she attempts to sort out her feelings for her fiancé back in san Francisco, she experiences the intricacies of social class; learns about local cuisine (lemon bars, smoked herring, and pudding, or "pud"); and attempts to overcome her problems with English as a "common " language as she teaches the youngest of her charges to speak, under the constant admonition, "Do try to speak as we do".
  • Fanny's Dream by Carolyn Buehner - This is a take on the Cinderella story. Fanny Agnes longs to go to the ball and marry a prince. She marries a farmer instead saying, "I don't do windows". When her fairy godmother finally arrives to make her dreams come true. well, the ending is too lovely to give away. this is delightful reading for children and adults.
  • The Harry Potter Series by J.K.Rowling - picked by three staff. Here are their comments:
    • A story about friendship, courage, choices and good vs. evil. Great for many ages.
    • Love H.P. of course and encourage adults to read them. You won't be able to put them down!
    • All the Harry Potter books. Especially the book-on-tape version. Great narration! What can I say that hasn't been said? Great story, great suspense, characters one can relate to, and good clean fun.
  • Junie B. Jones by Barbara Sparks - A feisty, mischievous 6 year old in kindergarten who always seems to fend trouble.
  • In the Hollow of Your Hand: Slave Lullabies by Alice McGill - Attached to the inside cover is a CD of Alice singing these lullabies she has collected and they are beautiful. When my granddaughters are of an age we'll read, listen and sing them together. There are many southern authors I especially admire: Eudora Welty, Carson McCullers, Walker Percy, and of course, Reynolds Price, and a list too long to list here.
  • Little House Series by Laura Ingalls Wilder - Story of the life of a pioneer girl through teenage years.
  • The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder - Although it will be spring by the time we get together and discuss these books, this is probably the best book to read in the dead of winter - there's nothing like reading about the icy experiences shared by the Ingalls family in the late 1800's to make you appreciate central heating and electric blankets.
  • Love You Forever by Robert Munsch - This is about the love of a mother for her child, then when the child is grown, his love for his aging mother. When my daughter was in pre-school, the teacher read it to us during a mother's day get together. There wasn't a dry eye in the place.
  • Madeline in America by Ludwig Bemelman - This book was written (just a rough draft) and filed away by the author, and after his death his grandson found the manuscript and drawings and published the book. Very cute story - exceptional art work. My son and I really enjoyed this.
  • The Memory String by Eve Bunting - While still grieving for her mother and unable to accept her new stepmother, Laura clings to the memories represented by 43 buttons on a string. Given by her late mother, Laura remains in the past until the string breaks and new memories are made and received.
  • Raisel's Riddle - A great fairy tale book and a great read for girls!
  • Ramona Quimby Age 8 by Beverly Cleary - This has been one of my favorite books since I was 8! It is a fun book. I enjoy all Ramona books in fact! There are some funny 8-year-old antics that Ramona does that remind me of when I was her age.
  • Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself by Judy Blume - The reason I love this book is because Sally has such great imagination. She makes up stories in her head and wants to be a movie star. She is a very lovable character that grows up during the time of World War II.
  • The Tree of the Dancing Goats by Patricia Polacco - A Holiday themed story. One of my favorite kids' authors.
  • 12 Days of Christmas also by Sabuda - Both of these are delightful and Sabuda's cut paper technique is amazing. The wizard of Oz is the original story by Baum, complemented by Sabuda's special effects. 12 Days of Christmas by Sabuda is beautiful in its simplicity, great cut paper effects all done in white with gold accents.
  • Wizard of Oz special edition illustrated by Robert Sabuda.
