There are so many things to think about as you start to consider which college or university to attend, or whether college is for you at all!

Where to Go


Peterson's Guide - Long known for their college information, the publishers of the Peterson's Guide have ventured into financial aid searches and test preparation as well. You can find profiles of thousands of colleges on this site.

  • Oklahoma State University - You may or may not want to go there, but you can use their handy, step-by-step guide to figure it out!
  • Brown University - Size, location, special interests, and costs ... use these four factors to figure out where you'd belong.
  • Choosing a College in days gone by - For a blast from the past, take a look at this essay about picking a university, written by a college president in 1940.

How to Get In

  • The College Board - All kinds of information from the people who brought you the SAT, PSAT, AP tests, the CLEP, and more. Register online for tests, research colleges, and apply online to the college of your choice.
  • Carleton College - This page gives tips about writing and editing that all-important document: the Admissions Essay.
  • EssayEdge.com - This is the place for a free online writing course geared toward teaching you to write the best admissions essay possible.
  • About.com - The people at about.com have put together a list of articles about admissions essay-writing, including "3 Steps to an Oustanding College Essay."
  • Indiana University - This page ain't pretty, but it's got tons of useful tips.
  • Westford College Interview Tips - Some colleges require an Admissions Interview. This page was created specifically for Westford, but many of the ideas carry over to other schools.
  • LearnATest - Click on "log on at home" to log in with your driver's license ... this site has full practice versions of many standardized tests, including the ACT and SAT.

How to Pay for It

  • Michigan Student Financial Aid - Learn about scholarships and financial aid for Michigan High School Graduates.
  • FAFSA - The official site of the Government's Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This application is the one you need to fill out in order to apply for government grants and loans, such as the Pell grant and Stafford and Perkins loans. Copies of the form are available at the BDL Information Desk.
  • Scholarships.com - They ask for a lot of information about you and your interested and accomplishments, but in return, they match you to scholarships you might qualify for.
  • The College Board Scholarship Info - The College Board folks have put together a page to help you search and apply for scholarships.
